How to export your Garmin Connect activity data
Garmin Connect lets you export any activity as its original file (a FIT file) or as a TCX or GPX. Upload the FIT file to Baseline — it preserves the most detail. Baseline reads Garmin FIT files today; TCX support is planned. Baseline is compatible with Garmin FIT files but is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by Garmin.
Can you export this data?
Yes. Every activity in Garmin Connect can be exported one-at-a-time from the web dashboard. Bulk export of your account is not currently available directly through the Connect UI, so plan on downloading the individual activities you care about most.
Step-by-step
- 1Open connect.garmin.com in a browser (activity export isn't available in the mobile app) and sign in.
- 2Click the Activities menu on the left, then Activities again to see your full list.
- 3Open the activity you want to export.
- 4On the activity page, click the gear icon in the top-right and choose Export → Original for the raw FIT file, or Export → TCX / GPX for those formats.
- 5Save the FIT file and upload it to Baseline. TCX and GPX will be supported later; FIT is what you want today.
What’s in the file
The Original export is a FIT file (binary) containing every data point your device recorded — heart rate, cadence, power, laps, GPS. TCX and GPX are XML-based and slightly lossier: GPX in particular strips most non-GPS metrics.
What Baseline does with it
Baseline reads Garmin FIT files for your session summary, heart rate, cadence, power (if recorded), pace and lap detail. When a Garmin activity matches a Concept2 workout on the same erg, Baseline treats the Concept2 file as canonical and keeps the Garmin heart-rate breadcrumb attached to it. Non-Garmin FIT files (Wahoo, COROS, and similar) are also readable on a best-effort basis.
Common issues
- TCX exports of very long activities can come out empty — Garmin's docs suggest using the FIT export in that case.
- GPX only contains GPS + basic HR. If you have a choice between GPX and FIT, always pick FIT.
- Garmin doesn't offer a one-click bulk export from Connect. If you have hundreds of activities, export the ones that matter (recent rows and any personal-best days) rather than trying to fetch everything.
Privacy note
Your Garmin files stay inside your private Baseline workspace. We don't share them with third parties, and the AI layer of Baseline only ever sees structured summaries derived from them — never the raw file.
Frequently asked
- Does Baseline use the Garmin Connect API?
- No. The Garmin Connect Developer Program requires a commercial agreement and is aimed at businesses. Baseline works from files you export yourself — no API access required.
- What about Garmin Connect+ (the paid tier)?
- Connect+ is Garmin's own premium/AI layer. Baseline sits above your existing tools — you can keep using Connect+ and still upload your files to Baseline for a joined-up view across Concept2 and Garmin together.
- I have a bike computer, not a watch. Same steps?
- Yes. Any activity Garmin Connect knows about — from any device — exports the same way. Baseline reads FIT files from Edge cycling computers too.
Ready when your file is
Once you have your export, upload it to Baseline and get one joined-up profile across rowing, endurance and body metrics.
