How to export your Android Health Connect data

Health Connect is the central Android store for health and fitness data. On Android 14 and later you can back it up to a cloud storage provider — here's how, and what Baseline can (and can't) do with it today.

Can you export this data?

Partly. Health Connect includes a backup / restore feature on Android 14+ that saves your Health Connect data to a cloud storage provider (Google Drive or similar). You can also use third-party helper apps that will export Health Connect data as CSV or Google Sheets.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Open Settings on your Android device.
  2. 2Search for Health Connect (or open it from the app list).
  3. 3Tap Backup & restore.
  4. 4Choose your storage provider and follow the prompts to create a backup.
  5. 5If you want a portable CSV file instead of a backup, install a third-party helper app (for example, one that reads Health Connect and writes to CSV or Google Sheets) and export from there.

What’s in the file

The Health Connect backup is a structured archive intended for restoring on another Android device. Third-party helpers can also convert Health Connect data into CSV files per data type (steps, HR, sleep, exercise).

What Baseline does with it

Baseline is web-based and file-upload-first, so we can't read Health Connect directly. The right way to bring Health Connect data into Baseline today is either (a) the underlying device's own export — for example, Garmin FIT files if your workouts came from a Garmin — or (b) a CSV produced by a Health Connect helper app.

Common issues

  • The built-in Health Connect backup is designed for device-to-device restore, not for portable use — some fields aren't easily readable outside Health Connect.
  • Not every helper app exports every data type. Steps, HR and sleep are widely supported; exercise sessions less so.
  • Health Connect only exists from a certain Android version onward — older devices won't have it.

Privacy note

Anything you upload to Baseline stays inside your private workspace and is used only to build your report. If you export Health Connect data via a third-party helper, check that app's own privacy stance first.

Frequently asked

Will Baseline ever read Health Connect directly?
That would require an Android app. It's on the roadmap but not in the MVP. For now, the workaround is exporting the underlying device's file, or CSV via a helper app.
Which Android version do I need?
Health Connect's built-in backup and restore features require Android 14 or later.
What's the difference between Health Connect and Google Fit?
Google Fit has been superseded by Health Connect as the central data store on Android. Google Health / Fitbit uses Google Takeout (see the Fitbit guide) — that's a different export path.
